Lions Meet Seattle Mariner and '20 Rookie of the Year, Kyle Lewis
The St. Andrew's Baseball program has a history of teamwork that extends beyond the baseball diamond. At the beginning of the year, Head Baseball coach Scott "Ab" Abernathy secured an invitation for ten Middle School student-athletes to travel to Mercer University of the Southern Conference for a once in a lifetime experience. Current Seattle Mariner and 2020 American League Rookie of the year, Kyle Lewis, was on campus at his alma mater and willing to meet with the Lions. Because of the special connection Coach "Ab" has with Mercer's head baseball coach, Craig Gibson, St. Andrew's players were allowed to meet and speak intimately with the MLB outfielder. They heard Lewis' personal story of his high school dreams of basketball and how he was recruited to use his talents for baseball under the direction of Coach Gibson. Lewis shared the story of his work ethic, teamwork, and competitive heart. The team toured the locker rooms, players lounge, and umpire dress as well. This trip offered a rare, behind the curtain view of the multi-billion dollar baseball industry. "This is a tremendous opportunity for our upcoming baseball players to look inside a D1 baseball program," said Coach Abernathy. This experience is one of many "team cohesiveness events" Lions baseball schedules. The bonds made off the field are sure to strengthen the team dynamic on the field this season.
